All of this happened a long time ago when the world was a very different place. Of course, none of us knew that at the time.

A reminder last night about how lucky I am.  To be a fan of music and to live in Nashville at this moment and to get to hang out with and get to know such incredible and creative people... It can be
easy to take it all for granted or even worse to compare myself and my experience to someone else. So, it is a good thing to have a reminder of my good fortune.

Last night, we recorded another show of Double Shot with Joe and Sue.  Sue and I have been doing our radio show on WXNA for over two years now. Let me back up. I have a freaking radio show! Even better, I have a radio show with one of my favorite people on the planet. And, thanks to Mark, we have a world-class engineer to make sure our recorded shows sound incredible.

Later, I went to Dee's for Madison Guild Monday. Heard great music - two new to me people and two that I have known for a few years. Got to talk to people who "get me" better than most. Conversations about M*A*S*H and Loudon Wainwright III and how great it is to be in Nashville right now.

Tomorrow, I may be down and feel unappreciated and unloved and unimportant, but if I do, I hope someone will remind me that today I said I am pretty damn lucky.

Alright then, it is Tuesday and we dive back into the "New Music" playlist (side note: I have a ton of new music to add to the playlist - hopefully soon). Another kind of quirky, kind of cool mix of songs let's go!

I will say once again, different beliefs are NOT the problem.  We are a country, which by our nature, has historically been a beacon to people with differing ideas and beliefs.

In my life, I have experienced several Presidents whose policies and agendas have clashed with what I believe is best or right. What all of those Presidents have done is at least give lip service to the idea they are representing all of us. They have spoken to all of us and presented this case and announced their decisions. Sometimes, I have liked or accepted their explanation and something I have hated it. Sometimes both with the same President.  My own political beliefs have developed and changed over time.

What I have witnessed these last two years is something different. Something horrifying. A president who speaks only to his base and considers other citizens to be the enemy. A president who speaks and tweets like a cheap radio talk show host. Who share conspiracy theories and who lies constantly and seemingly with immunity.  A president, in short, who acts like an asshole. And the result is that it has emboldened assholes to behave like assholes even more so than typical. I experienced this - again - this weekend. I knew the man was trouble when he talked in with his confederate flag hat. Sure enough, he acted like an asshole. Throwing insults and taunts, and when he was called on his behavior, he pouted like a little child. Like his president.

I am dismayed and discouraged, but for now, I still believe that light will overcome the darkness, and I still believe that there is more good than evil in this world.  I just hope good will get up off it's ass and do something - and do something soon.

Music is still my balm. And, it's Monday, so we have our usual Music City Monday shuffle to get the week off on the right foot.

Well it's Friday, and the first work week of October is winding down.  Here in Nashville, we are still having summer-like temperatures even as the days get shorter.

Anyway, it is Friday, and we have a typically eclectic shuffle from our "New Music" playlist.

There have so been so many times... but there was a turning point when it went from being political to being personal and moral. I know what that point was for me.  For me it was when then candidate Trump mocked a reporter with disabilities and lost not one bit of support. More to the point, it was when people who know me and who know my daughter continued to support this candidate. It felt to me like he was mocking my daughter and some of my friends and family were cheering him on. That was the turning point for me, and it has only gotten worse and worse and worse, and it is every single day. And, I am getting tired of it. Tired of seeing people who I know - who I know have different political beliefs - demonstrating their utter lack of humanity. I honestly don't know how we come back from this place, but I want the bleeding to stop. I am going to Vote in November - like my life depends on it.  If you feel the way I do, I hope you will, too.

Time to dive back into the "New Music" playlist.  We have a bunch of new stuff and a fairly wide range of music.  Let's go!

I have often written about $2 Tuesday hosted by Derek Hoke at The 5 Spot. It is consistently great fun and even you don't know the performers, it is consistently great music. In case you are wondering, I am not getting paid to say this, but they do let me pay just $2 admission to see 4 or 5 quality bands/artists, and pay $2 for Yazoo beers.   Last night, started with Ryan Sobb (I'm going to see saying it), he is one of my favorite "new" songwriters in Nashville. Next was Lauren Anderson (with Taylor Kropp playing guitar) - I had never heard Anderson, but I really dug it.  Next was Derek Hoke himself - as always a solid set of music with the rhythm section of Mark Robertson (Legendary Shack Shakers, Eskimos, and Prayer Flag) and Steve Latanation (Agent Orange, Stone Cupid).  Next was Austin based, south Louisiana born Rod Melancon with great band.  I've been following his music closely and it was great seeing him live and in person.  I was tired and didn't get to see much of the late night band, Truett, but what I heard sounded great.  As always, DJ Tim Hibbs kept the music going between live acts.

It's Wednesday, and I'm a bit tired from last night, but I must push on.  As we do on Wednesdays, we have a shuffle from all of the songs saved to my phone. We call it "Wild Wednesday" - let's shuffle!

Some thoughts:  At a certain point, you realize that things will not/cannot ever go back to the way things used to be. This is true in our individual lives and as a society. It is an existential truth, but often a slow, gradual realization.  There are many reasons that this is always, ultimately the truth. One being that often things never really were the "way they used to be".  Our perception of the past is clouded by nostalgia and selective memory and other filters that obscure. On a national or societal scale, what I am saying may be seen as a criticism of conservatism or an argument for progressive philosophies. And, I am fine with that, but my thoughts today are more on a personal nature. Remembering what ones childhood was like or even what the music scene in Nashville was like twenty, ten, five, or even two years ago.

Since this is a music blog, I will stick with the last example for now. Looking at Nashville's music scenes/communities, my perspective is unique. Nashville has seen incredible changes over even the last four years - since this current phase of my life began. What is difficult for me is determining where it is that the scene has changed (and I use scene in a neutral sense not - as some use it - in a derogatory sense) and how it is that I have changed or my perspective has changed. My perception is that there are more shows and more venues for the types of music I like to go see. My perception is that two years ago, when I went to see friends play music, other music friends were often hanging around more than happens now, and conflicting shows were rarer. But is that perception accurate, or is it that I know more people and thus have more conflicts or is it that my core group of friends are busier and more scattered.

The bottom line is that it is a waste of my energy to try to recreate or recapture the feel of the scene of four years ago from my perspective. My time and energy are better spent finding my place in the present and experiencing it to the fullest extent possible.

Just some thoughts on a dreary Tuesday in early October - as the world spins on - oblivious to the chaos in the world and in my own heart and mind....

It's Tuesday - the day we dig into the "New Music" playlist and see what the shuffle brings up to tell us what is "trending" as of today.

Wow!  It's October now!  The month starts on a Monday, which means we have our first Music City Monday of October. Music City Monday is when we explore the rich and varied music made by people who have, do, or will call Nashville home. Okay, not really the "will" part - if I included people who could potentially move to Nashville at some point, I could literally included any living musician... hmm... but no! Just those who do or have called Nashville home. The songs included are new and not so new and cover a wide variety of styles.

Let's shuffle!
