Well - it is the first day of the last month of the year. I guess I am sentimental or something - I always see the end of the calendar year as a good excuse to look back and make changes... in this most unusual of years - I am not clear about anything... but I do need to do some reflecting...
The upcoming music listing is getting rather skimpy - partially due to December being typically slow for new releases and partially due to my being way behind of going through my e-mail...
Anyway, onward...
Our recap of this week's Playlist continues with songs 11-13:
11. "The Metro - Orchestra Version" by Berlin
The iconic L.A. synth pop band fronted by Terri Nunn reimagine some of their biggest hits with a full symphonic orchestra. This was always one of my favorite songs by the band. Nashville's own Lemuel Hayes (Buck n Stuff) toured with the band last year as a drum tech and got to play drums for a couple or few shows.
12. "Lord of the Flies" by Lars Finberg
L.A. singer-songwriter Lars Finberg is up next with a track from his second solo album Tinnitus Tonight. Finberg is the leader of the band The Intelligence. Really dig this
13. "Mountains and Grooves" by Tuath
And, we close this short segment of music with the new single from the Irish band that originally formed to promote the Irish language. This fantastic single - the first in a series of singles - featured vocalist Jude Barriscale of the band Lunch Machine.
Featured Friday Playlist
Tuesday Morning Shuffle:
"Foolish and Blue" by LadyCouch (single 2020)
A recent single from one of my favorite bands around. Allen Thompson and Keshia Bailey have created something special in LadyCouch and I look forward to them continuing to get the attention they deserve.
"I Ain't Home" by Andrea & Mud (from Bad News Darlin' 2020)
Next up, a track from one of my favorite albums of the year. By the Atlanta duo who create their own brand of "surf-western" music.
"Dream Receiver" by K Michelle Dubois (from Harness 2018)
Sticking with Atlanta - we have a track from an album we featured a couple of years ago by a fantastic singer-songwriter.
"Zombie Romance" by BlackSheepLad (from Sleeping Alone in the Daytime 2020)
Paul Mellen is BlackSheepLad - the UK artist contracted COVID in March and has been dealing with on-going issues related to that. He also lost his job due to the pandemic. With time on his hands, like many of us (okay like me), he watched zombie shows on television. Unlike me, he wrote a song about it. We have another of his tracks later in this week's Featured Friday Playlist.
"Ruby Eyed Wolf Head Ring" by No. 1 Knife (from Mr. Nickelsworth 2020)
When I hear the term power couple, I think of Brian Wright and Sally Jaye. They co-founded Cafe Rooster Records (home of LadyCouch and so much more), they are raising two incredible kids, and now they have formed a band. I could not find any specific videos of No.1 Knife on YouTube - but lots of videos about knives. So, the video playlist includes a video of Sally Jaye performing at an E2TG Residency with Brian Wright on guitar (and an all-star band).
"I Can't Stop the Rain (demo)" by In Pursuit (from Demo 1984)
We close things out with a 1984 demo from one of my favorite 1980s Nashville bands. In Pursuit - which featured Emma Grandillo, Jeff Boggs, and future super-producer Jay Joyce played some pretty tasty pop music. Their recorded output is slight and mostly hard to come-by so gems like this - found via Nashville80sRock(dot)net are coveted by those who still remember the band. I found a video someone made of all of the demos from this set.
