Another Friday brings another Featured Friday Playlist. I know I always say this - because it is always true - but I am really excited about this week's playlist. I am looking forward to recapping it over the next week - beginning with the first ten songs - below the jump. You can also check out the whole Playlist below and on Spotify. Featured Friday Playlist
"My Last Dream of You" by Anana Kaye and David Olney
To say, I am looking forward to the full album release of Whispers and Sighs would be a massive understatement. I have been looking forward to this album since I first heard that Olney was working with Anana Kaye and Irakli Gabriel. I know first hand how much respect and admiration Olney had for those two. The album is out one month from today. This is the second song released.
"Going to the Woods" by DeeOhGee
I believe this maybe the second official release by the newly renamed Blackfoot Gypsies. Maybe three if you count the Christmas split single with The Smoking Flowers. I love this band so much. They have been a vital part of the Nashville music community for several years and they exude so much positivity. This is a favorite song to hear the band do live, and I look forward to my next opportunity to see them do that.
"Normal Girl" by Bebe Buell
Only, half coincidentally, we next have a track from the new album - Hard Love - by the legendary Bebe Buell. This song really rocks. The first time I saw Buell perform - she had the Blackfoot Gypsies as her surprise guest. She is a huge fan of the group. A few weeks after that show - which I got to review for No Depression, I found myself dancing beside Buell at a Blackfoot Gypsies show - which was something I will never forget. Buell was an iconic figure in late 20th Century music and culture, and she has made some wonderful music of her own since and before moving to Music City.
"something" by elkyn
Leeds-based singer-songwriter elkyn (aka Joseph Donnelly) has quickly gained my attention for his lovely songs. This is his most recent single and it is worth checking out.
"The Dead Inside" by Palm Ghosts
Nashville's resident post-punk/new wave/Manchester sound inspired band have become increasingly prolific over the last couple of years. Their latest single is out today, and it finds the band which features Joseph Lekkas and Benjamin Jason Douglas continuing to move their sound forward. While their music does sound like some great lost late 80s/early 90s UK post punk masterpiece - it also manages to avoid being derivative. They seem to have tapped into the spirit of that music.
"Like a Dog" by Tayls
We have a bit to wait for Tayls' Have You Ever? I've Always full-length, but the singles released so far have captured and caught our attention. If 2020 was the time for the Nashville band led by Taylor Cole to focus on cover songs - 2021 finds the band with a lot of their own words to say.
"Cripple Creek Ferry" by The Danberrys
The duo of Dorothy Daniel and Ben Deberry are back with their latest single - a cover of the Neil Young classic (the final song on his After the Gold Rush album). The band have two more singles planned for the next couple of months.
"12 Miles" by Jacob the Horse
L.A. based - Jacob the Horse are another band who have quickly caught our attention with the exceedingly fun music. This is the final pre-release single from their forthcoming 2nd album College Party Mixtape, Vol. 1 (due out March 19).
"Cry Over - Acoustic" by Austin Lucas
Next up, we have an acoustic version of a song from Lucas' 2020 release Alive in the Hot Zone. The Indiana native (and one time Nashville resident) is one of my favorite and one of the most authentic songwriters around. His ability to connect with his audience is unmatched. His shows often end with Lucas unplugging, jumping off stage, and singing (unamplified) from the middle of the audience. Every time I have experienced this has been a powerful moment - because there is no doubt it is a genuine gesture that comes for Lucas' humility and which amplifies his fan's sense of belonging.
"Drinking to Forget" by Zach Russell
And we close with a track from the recent EP The Creek by Nashville based singer-songwriter Zach Russell. Russell was sent my way by Will Payne Harrison. I knew this would be good music - knowing it had the tacit endorsement of Harrison, and when I listened - my suspicions we're confirmed: Zach Russel is making some great music.
