We head into the holiday weekend with a brand new Featured Friday Playlist. This week's list is considerably shorter than last week (just over half as long) but it is jam packed with great music from old friends and favorites and new favorites (and hopefully some new friends). As always, if you are so inclined, you can follow the Featured Friday Playlist on Spotify.
The usual disclaimers apply: 1. Support the artists you love financially to the extent you are able. 2. Our list should not be considered a ranking of any kind. There is always a combination of intention and randomness in how the songs are ordered on our playlist.
Also, I'll add a new one - if you discover a "new to you" artist through E2TG and our Featured Friday Playlist- let us know.
The first 13 songs are recapped below - we will recap the remaining songs next week (we are off on Monday).
Featured Friday Playlist
1. "Hi, Society" by Adam Kurtz
You may know Adam "Ditch" Kurtz from his pedal steel work with Zach Schmidt, Sarah Shook & the Disarmers, Great Peacock, American Aquarium, and many more. You may know him from Buck n Stuff (as seen in Rolling Stone). You may know him from his stint backing Derek Hoke for $2 Tuesday, Almost $2 Tuesday, and Another Tuesday Night. You may know his from his collection of ambient pedal steel and bass releases with Cameron Carrus. You may know his as the mysterious "Man in Mask" from last year's viral release (as seen in Rolling Stone). You may know him from The WingdomTM Instagram page. Or, you may not know him at all. Either way, he has a great new EP perfect for our times. Check it out!
2. "Neoliberal Blues" by Michael Zimmerman
Next up, we have a cool new EP from Nashville musician Michael Zimmerman. I believe it is his third EP since last year. I first met him as part of Nelson, Zimmerman, and Quinn a few years back. Since then, I have seen him playing with a lot of different people and projects, but I especially really dig his solo work.
3. "Fly Boy" by The Problem With Kids Today
The second single from the red hot Connecticut trio which features Tate & Silas who we featured a few times in their previous incarnation.
4. "Speed of the Sound of Loneliness" by Jeff Mix and the Songhearts
An unconventional John Prine cover by our friend Jeff Mix and his band. This was recorded in Nashville and is included on teh Kiss My Ass Goodbye John Prine tribute compilation which Devil's Town Records is releasing in limited edition vinyl on Record Store Day on July 17. Mix and family recently moved back to Las Vegas, but they will always be part of the Nashville community.
5. "Everything Belongs to You" by Georg Nielsen
Another lovely instrumental from our old friend Jon Magnusson who now records as Georg Nielsen. He is currently on parental leave but released this previously recorded track as a treat, and it is.
6. "Nobody Knows Anything" by Bikini Test Failure
One of the absolute best things about doing E2TG is connecting with people around the world. Sometimes even over shared tragedy. That is what happened this year with Manchester artist Bikini Test Failure. This is the latest single.
7. "Maybe It's A UFO" by Dude Safari
It is always great to catch a band at the beginning of their musical career. This is the fourth single by this band from Surrey, England and the fourth track we have featured. Always fun songs with great graphics.
8. "What Would Dolly Do?" (W.W.D.D.)" by Side Piece
I have to give a shout out to my friend and fellow music fan, Van DeLisle for turning me onto this Nashville band featuring a badass collection of female side musicians who banded together.
9. "Our People" by Emma-Jean Thackray
I have become a big fan of UK artist Emma-Jean Thackray in a short time, and her new release Yellow is out today. Here is a track.
10. "Machine" by Black Needle Noise
Next up, we have the latest release from the musical project of the legendary John Fryer. Always a treat when a new Black Needle Noise song comes out.
11. "Boomtown" by The Two Man Travelling Medicine Show
Next, the latest single from this UK Americana/country/punk band - a cool reflection on being in a band during COVID.
12. "Solid Supposed" by Caulbearers (feat. Ruth Blake)
Next up, a fantastic new single from Manchester's Caulbearers along with Somerset singer Ruth Blake.
13. "Turn to You" by Cole Scheifele
And we close this segment of music with the latest single from this Boulder, Colorado based singer-songwriter whose new album The Hideaways is due out on the 22nd of this month.
