Having been sick for the past several days, I finally felt well enough to venture out last night, and I made it to three different venues and saw some amazing music.
First stop was The Bowery Vault. I'm not sure how this was the first time I have visited this lovely venue. It is a vintage clothing store with a comfortable sitting area a nice stage area - complete with a curtain! Daphne Martin from Connecticut was passing through town - she is on tour with violinist Kieran Ledwidge. Wonderful music - featuring the guitarist who played on Martin's new album (who just happened to be in town, Andrew Sovine).
After that, I headed over to The Crying Wolf - for a show in their on-going SongNest series - hosted by Anana Kaye and Irakli Gabriel who performed with Brett Stewart and Rosemary Fosse. Their guests included Erica Blinn, Ryan Sobb, and Tommy Womack. Talk about a heap of talent packed into one hour and a half show!
Finally, I headed to The 5 Spot to end my evening at $2 Tuesday - sadly, I didn't make it time to see Chris Moyse - one of my favorite songwriters, but I did get to catch Derek Hoke and his incredible band tear it up. And I stayed for War Child - an East Nashville supergroup of sorts who really rocked the house.
Happy to report that after all that I am still feeling spry today...

I'm back. I took an unexpected sick day off work yesterday. This extreme weather is getting the best of me, but we are in the midst of a couple of days of sunshine, and I feel much better. So onward.

Uggg! A winter cold hit me hard yesterday afternoon, and I went down hill fast. I ended up staying in last night to rest up, and I feel a little better today but still kind of icky. Plus, it is a cold, wet, and dreary day in Nashville. So, I needed an extra good shuffle of music to get me through the commute. It is Friday, which we usually devote to Featured Friday. As I mentioned before, when I transferred music to my new phone, I lost my previous playlists. I haven't created a new Featured Friday playlist - still contemplating what that will look like. Anyway, since we missed Trending Tuesday this week, I am digging back into our Trending playlist of the newest of the new music we have to present.
Here goes!

I am back. I had an extra extended long weekend - to recuperate from whatever it is I need to recuperate from. I am back and it is Wild Wednesday. We have a pretty wild one today.
By the way, some behind the scenes technical information. I got a new phone over the long weekend, and so this was officially the first shuffle off the new phone. I did have to recreate my playlist. So the Trending Thursday shuffle tomorrow will be the first from the new Trending playlist. I had to recreate it from memory.
I have not tried to recreate the Featured Friday playlist, and I am thinking of taking a different approach with that one. More on that later.
Let's get right to the shuffle!

Another great night at The 5 Spot - with Jason Ringenberg on the second week of his month-long residency. I got to thinking about why I enjoyed it so much (because the obvious answer that it was great music). I think I have a sentimental/nostalgic streak in me, however when it comes to live music, I am generally more interested in seeing a new artist. To me the worst thing would be to see a band or artist that I have loved for years - powering through a set of songs I know well that are uninspired and when it is clear the artist or band is miserable. That is the feeling I got when I saw Dylan in 1988. He did all the classic songs, the band was good, and it was (in my opinion) a horrible show. Contrast to when I saw Dylan a few years back. He played almost exclusively songs from more recent albums that I didn't know very well, he again had a great band, but this time Dylan seemed to be having a blast. And I consider that a great show.
Jason Ringenberg seems to genuinely be having a great time at this residency shows (he said he was multiple times so I tend to believe him). His set was a good mix of songs from his new album, songs from his solo careers, and some classic Scorchers numbers. He was engaged with the audience, and as a result it was a great evening of music.
Anyway, I have jump into the shuffle now. It's Featured Friday at E2TG. I am not going to try to explain my Feature Friday playlist. All our brand new music is here, plus some previously brand new music from the last year or so, plus some extras. Well, I guess I did try to explain it. Anyway, MUSIC!

I am a firm believer that artists of all kinds are as important as ever in these divisive and contentious times. We need people who speak truth to power without compromise. It is unfortunate that this is also a time when artists work has been effective devalued to one of its lowest points. This last is a much larger discussion than I have time to get into.
There was some major (and disturbing news) involving a music artist that broke yesterday. Also, today is Valentine's Day. I am not going to comment on either at this time.
Micah Schnabel's songs speak truth even when that truth is hard. As much as I love Two Cow Garage (and I do), it is in a solo setting, where his music always hits me the hardest. He opened the early show at The 5 Spot in fine form. Jon Latham was next. His songs hold equal power often on an emotional level - like "Braver Man" or "Conversation at a Funeral" both of which he sang last night. He did perform two new songs - one of the songs delves into the current political climate. Latham closed his set doing an intense Two Cow Garage song joined by Schnabel. Lauren Farrah closed the night. Farrah is an East Nashville fixture - unless I am mistaken this was my first time seeing her do a full set with a full band - and what a band it was.... Tim Jones, Griffin Winton, Chase McGillis. There is a reason that Lauren Farrah is generating a lot of buzz.

One of those not-so-rare, but still super special nights in Nashville - which means way more going one than one person can possibly see. Amazing musicians and songwriters making amazing new music, good hangs with good friends. Highlights include seeing the legendary Jason Ringenberg perform songs from his new album Standing Tall and songs from his long career - including some Jason and the Scorchers classics and the Teletubbies theme song!
A drive from The 5 Spot to Dee's with Jon Latham talking about punk rock music and other stuff.
Getting to at least hear one song by Sally Jaye, and then Amelia White celebrating the release of her new album Rhythm of the Rain with a powerhouse band and backup singers whose credits and connections read like a history of American music over the last thirty or so years. The show closed with a stirring rendition of White's "How it Feels" with an all-star chorus on stage and a bar full of singers off stage. The song reflects the experiences of LGBT+ individuals growing up in the South. The communal experience in a "Country" bar in that same American South coming at a time when our nations leaders seek to roll back progress and bring back discrimination was a powerfully defiant, hopeful, and joy-filled experience.
This has been a rough week overall - emotionally. I don't know if it has been this crazy weather or something else. Last night was wonderful medicine, but I'm still happy to put this week to rest. We have one final shuffle for the week - it is our weekly Featured Friday shuffle. Don't worry about what this playlist is or isn't. We have some cool songs - so enjoy!

Happy International Clash Day!
My favorite radio station WXNA has several Clash-themed shows today. Plus, tonight at Grimey's WXNA DJs will be spinning Clash and Clash-related tunes, and there will be a special performance by Nashville's favorite Clash tribute band - Tommy Gun - featuring Tommy Womack!
Meanwhile, Nashville legend Jason Ringenberg celebrates the release of his new album at The 5 Spot - kicking off a month-long residency. Later, Amelia White - celebrates the release of her new album at Dee's Country Cocktail Lounge with Sally Jaye and guest Will Kimbrough.
The volume of great new music coming out already this still fairly new year has been staggering. Just the music I have to feature is incredible. So, let's dive into the Trending Thursday Shuffle!

On a warm, overcast Wednesday morning - fresh off another night out that reminded me again of the amazing live music scene in Nashville (amazing in the sense of the amount of talent and the number of options any given night). We take a break from our focus on "new music" for a always fun - Wild Wednesday shuffle that includes an eclectic mix of new and not-so-new music from a variety of sources.

That was the week that was....
It's Friday! A gloomy day in Nashville. I've been reminded again of the incredible selection of live music going on just about every single night in many different size venues featuring all kinds of talented performers.
Last night, I went out to Dee's to see the amazingly talented Lisa Oliver Gray joined by Will Kimbrough on guitar. These two have been important parts of the Nashville music community for many years. The first time I saw Will Kimbrough live was over 30 years ago with his band Will and the Bushmen.
It's time for our last shuffle of the week. And our first of February! This is Featured Friday - which MAY include the newest of the new but also some other less recent submissions and some miscellaneous acquisitions to my personal collection of music.
Let's go!
