Wild Wednesday Morning Shuffle - Misdiagnosis Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Having been sick for the past several days, I finally felt well enough to venture out last night, and I made it to three different venues and saw some amazing music.

First stop was The Bowery Vault. I'm not sure how this was the first time I have visited this lovely venue. It is a vintage clothing store with a comfortable sitting area a  nice stage area - complete with a curtain!  Daphne Martin from Connecticut was passing through town - she is on tour with violinist Kieran Ledwidge. Wonderful music - featuring the guitarist who played on Martin's new album (who just happened to be in town, Andrew Sovine).

After that, I headed over to The Crying Wolf - for a show in their on-going SongNest series - hosted by Anana Kaye and Irakli Gabriel who performed with Brett Stewart and Rosemary Fosse. Their guests included Erica Blinn, Ryan Sobb, and Tommy Womack.  Talk about a heap of talent packed into one hour and a half show!

Finally, I headed to The 5 Spot to end my evening at $2 Tuesday - sadly, I didn't make it time to see Chris Moyse - one of my favorite songwriters, but I did get to catch Derek Hoke and his incredible band tear it up.   And I stayed for War Child - an East Nashville  supergroup of sorts who really rocked the house.

Happy to report that after all that I am still feeling spry today...

Let's get right into our Wild Wednesday shuffle - which lives up to the name.

"Special Agent" by Bert Deivert and Copperhead Run

First up, we have the only song in today's shuffle that is part of our current new music playlist. It is preeminent blues mandolin player Bert Deivert (whose incredible list of credits include playing with Peter Case in the early days of his career on the streets of San Francisco) and his band of Swedish musicians called Copperhead Run.  The album is called Blood in My Eyes for You. It is wonderful classic blues sounds like you have never heard them before.

"Shake It Up" by Stuffy Shmitt

I ran into Stuffy Shmitt last night at The Crying Wolf, and today the shuffle brings up one of his songs. This is from his 2012 album Industrial Love. A really marvelous song. The album features not only Shmitt's wonderful songwriting but the assistance of many fine folks including Anton Fier (Golden Palominos) and Aaron Lee Tasjan!

"Vietnam" by Bob Rea

Next up, we have a track from Southbound - which we featured heavily last year. A touching ode to a lost friend and the circle of life.  Rea is a singer-songwriter who divides time between his native Colorado and Nashville.

"Summertime Blues" by Eddie Cochran

Eddie Cochran was only 21 years old when he was tragically killed in a road accident, but he left a last legacy.  This - one of his best known songs - was originally a b-side before be released in 1958 and hitting the top ten. The song has been covered many times. One of my all-time favorite songs. Jon Latham (who I also saw last night - at The 5 Spot) references this song is his song, "Major Key" - "Misdiagnosed me with the Summertime Blues" -which is where my shuffle subtitle comes from today.

"To the Homeland" by Malcolm Holcombe

Next up, we have a live recording of a song originally released on the 1999 debut album A Hundred Lies by one-time Nashville resident and current Asheville resident Malcolm Holcombe.  This recording is taken from a 2002 compilation called The Living Room: Live in NYC, Vol. 1.

"Sea of Love" by Emily West

Next up, we have Nashville's own Emily West with her cover of the 1959 Phil Phillips song - which was West's audition song for Season 9 of America's Got Talent (she was runner-up that season). The song has been covered by many different artists including The Honeydrippers (with Robert Plant) who had a hit with the song in 1984. West's version is just gorgeous.

"Evasion De Julien" by Miles Davis

Next up, we have a track from the soundtrack to Louis Malle's 1958 French New Wavew crime drama -  Elevator to the Gallows. The stunning soundtrack (one of my favorites) is by the great Miles Davis - and was mostly composed live in the studio while the movie was being projected onto screens.

"Drying the Eyes of the Goddess of Gloom" by Gloom Balloon

Next up, we go back to one of our favorite albums from 2017 - Drying the Eyes of the Goddess of Gloom, Underneath the Stars and the Moon by Iowa band Gloom Balloon. This is sort of the title track and it is a good reminder of what it was I loved about this album.  Check out the video in the playlist below.

"Wilder Side" by Carter Sampson

And we close with a track from Oklahoma singer-songwriter Carter Sampson. This was the title track to her 2016 album. We got this from the CD put out by Horton Records for the 2016 Oklahoma Room showcase at Folk Alliance. This was the CD that I found at The 5 Spot shortly after the Folk Alliance 2016 had wrapped up.
