Featured Friday Morning Shuffle - Sea Waiting Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

That was the week that was....

It's Friday!  A gloomy day in Nashville.  I've been reminded again of the incredible selection of live music going on just about every single night in many different size venues featuring all kinds of talented performers.

Last night, I went out to Dee's to see the amazingly talented Lisa Oliver Gray joined by Will Kimbrough on guitar.  These two have been important parts of the Nashville music community for many years.  The first time I saw Will Kimbrough live was over 30 years ago with his band Will and the Bushmen.

It's time for our last shuffle of the week.  And our first of February!  This is Featured Friday - which MAY include the newest of the new but also some other less recent submissions and some miscellaneous acquisitions to my personal collection of music.

Let's go!

"Mama Scared the Hell Into Me" by Reckless Johnny Wales

Nashville's own Reckless Johnny Wales returns to the shuffle with another track from his latest album Runaway Train of Thought.   I've shared the story of Reckless Johnny several times - suffice it say, he is about as Nashville as it gets - and honestly the best bridge I can think of between "old Nashville" and "new Nashville" when it comes to his music.  The truth is - although there is much to be frustrated with and irritated about  when it comes to the explosion of growth and development - there is still something special when it comes to Nashville and original music. Reckless Johnny embodies what is special very well for my tastes.
"Sea" by Searmanas
Taking a hard left turn, our next track is another from the self-titled album by electronic music artist Searmanas - the moniker of Niabi Aquena who is based out of New York City, and originally from the Shenandoah Valley of rural Virginia.  Dark ambient music. A nice soundtrack to my drive to work.

"Waiting" by Eraldo Bernocchi and Chihei Hatakeyama

Continuing the ambient, instrumental music theme - we have our final track to feature from Solitary Universe - a collaboration between two incredibly inventive guitarists. Eraldo Bernocchi is an Italian composer, producer, and guitarist.  Chihei Hatakeyama is a Japanese sound artist and guitarist. Their album  - released about a year ago is a gorgeous collection of electronically enhanced sounds It is lovely music.

"The Other Side of Wrong" by Ben Bostick

Another hard left turn takes us to another track from Hellfire by California via South Carolina outlaw country artist Ben Bostick.  This is the kind of high energy, really good Country music that is great for waking me up as I get closer to my office.

"The Holy War" by Twilight Fields

I have noticed a recent uptick in politically themed music coming my way.  It makes sense - music often takes some time to get from the songwriting to the release.  One of the highlights for me in recent weeks has been the album Songs from the Age of Ruin by Canadian band Twilight Fields.  The songs on this album are timely and wonderful.

"Sinking Sun" by Amelia White

Amelia White is back in the shuffle again.  An East Nashville and E2TG favorite, it is so good to have her latest album Rhythm of the Rain out here in the States. Looking forward to her CD release show next week at Dee's.

"Sugarface" by Fjokra

We close with the base version of "Sugarface" by Fjokra - a multi-instrumentalist originally from Dublin and based in London.  It's really interesting to read the quotes on the artist's Facebook page from people trying to describe the music of this unique musician. I am not going to even make attempt today, except to say this is fun, original music was a perfect accompaniment to arriving at my office.
