E2TG 5/21/2021 - Featured Friday - Under My Skin Mix (Stop for a Minute Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Can you believe it is Friday?!  Actually, I kind of can... but anyway, it is time for another Featured Friday Playlist.  This week's list is a little smaller (we'll see how it goes but I am thinking about trying to avoid the extra long playlist for the foreseeable future).  But, a lot of that depends on the how much great new music is being released.  And I sure don't want that to slow down.

E2TG 5/20/2021 - Hugs and Beer - Separate Mix (This Ain't Love Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

A bit short on time, I was out last night - seeing people and checking out Mark Robinson Band with John Jackson - which was next level good  and the Brian Wright and the Sneak-Ups with guest Jon Latham.  I realized that both played as part of my 2017 E2TG Residency.  It was such a wonderful and needed night.

Time to wrap up this week's Featured Friday Playlist.  And we really did save some of the best for last...

35. "Dreaming with Alice - Verse 1" by Mark Fry
This is a reissue of 1971 - sought after psych-folk album which came out just last week on Now-Again Reserve Records.  Tremendous. I didn't know anything about this album or about Mark Fry but I am captivating. Fry was just 19 when this was originally recorded.
36. "Alive" by Dope Sagittarius

37. "Until When" by Jaffa Road
New single from this Toronto based Jewish roots band.  It is the lead single from an album due out in the fall.
38. "Shooting Star" by Løwenørn
A new project from our old friend Sverre of Supercrashingstar.  Supercrashingstar has a new album out - which we will feature in the new Playlist premiering tomorrow.
39. "Sad Girls Club" by I M U R

40. "Accountability" by DeLila Black
Great new punk country single from the UK - with BJ Cole on lap steel guitar.
41. "Fierce and Delicate Things" by Shay Martin Lovette
And why not close out the playlist with one of the strongest songs on the list. Scatter & Gather is the new album from this North Carolina based singer-songwriter.  Fantastic songs and great sounding music. A wonderful way to close out the week's playlist.

E2TG 5/19/2021 - The Art of Randomness - Ghost on the Roof Mix (Walnuts Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Since before the beginning of E2TG, the random shuffle has been a thing I do. I like letting the phone or playlist pick the songs (after I have created said playlist).  I have also noted over time - that with randomness, one may discern what seem to be patterns.  For example, an artist or album coming up multiple times in a week - against the odds.  Or running into someone one night, and having their song come up the next morning (I know they think I did that on purpose). Or an artist coming up just before a big show...

If I am honest, though, there are times when I really want a song or album to come up in the shuffle and it just doesn't.  It is frustrating but it is rare.  If I am going to trust in randomness, I have to do so absolutely - at least in this type of situation.

The next segment of this week's Featured Friday Playlist is next (28-34):

28. "Flow" by Mojave Grey
First up, we have the new single from this California band (based between L.A. and Joshua Tree) led by Zander Bleck and featuring Michael Pozzi (who we have previously featured recording as Pozzi).  It is a unique form of desert rock.
29. "Elevator" by Goodge
UK producer combining hip-hop and jazz.
30. "Have a Good Time" by Ender Bender
New single from the L.A. artist currently based in Rome.
31. "Secondhand" by Gasleben & Electric Friends

32. "So We Begin" by Pikefruit

33. "Fast Car" by Chartelli
Second single from the Vancouver based artist.
34. "Bluebird, Hollywood... Domino" by The Gorstey Lea Street Choir
We end this segment with a nifty tune from this UK band who are preparing their next album. Great sound.

E2TG 5/18/2021 - Out of Kindness I Suppose - Ash Planet Mix (Chimneyville Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Thinking today about kindness.  First of all - don't believe the hype - kindness still exists and it is all around, you just have to look for it.

I do feel like in some circles kindness gets a bad rap.  The whole mistaking kindness for weakness thing.

But then, I heard something yesterday - the whole rant was kind of stupid, and I won't go into details, but the relevant part was some idea that somehow - "toughness" or aggressiveness was kind and gentleness was unkind.  First of all, I do agree that there are times when being direct is ultimately kinder than hedging ones comments. But, that directness issued too abruptly or sharply - can be less than kind.

Ultimately, I think kindness is thinking of others as well as thinking of ones self (self-kindness is important too).  Apply that how you will...

The next part of the Featured Friday Playlist covers songs 20-27:

20. "All We Need" by Vela Rosa
Canadian band. 2nd single from forthcoming debut album.
21. "Hold On My Love" by The Ruddy Ruckus

22. "Simple" by Indigo Road

23. "Shine" by Hannah Schzde

24. "Dreamed Not Felt" by Faraji Heritage Experiment
Fantastic instrumental from this French based composer. Combines jazz fusion, beatmaking, tripping piano, broken beats, warmth, nostalgia, and abstract hip-hop.
25. "Restless" by Nathan Lawr

26. "Absolument" by Luke Concannon
UK artist. I love this song. Check it out.
27. "Fading Out - Acoustic" by Ben Hemming

E2TG 5/14/2021 - Featured Friday & Music City Monday - No No Mix (Sixteen Tons Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

I am back after an unexpected day off...

Well, I alluded to this last post, and then circumstances forced my hand... I don't think doing a full recap of the Featured Friday Playlist is feasible given my return to live music.  I was under the weather Friday and so today, we will present the brand new Featured Friday Playlist which debuted last Friday.

Follow the Playlist on Spotify and check it out each Friday for a new playlist.  Also, follow E2TG on Instagram and view the stories to catch a glimpse of the songs and maybe hear a snippet.

Meanwhile, we will be hitting somewhat random, somewhat not highlights here.   More changes to come as I figure it out.

Here is the first part of the Playlist:

1. "Prufrock's Pickup Line" by Cold Equations
2. "Glory Glory" by Lindsay Ellyn
3. "Wide Awake 5AM" by Megan Palmer
4. "First Curse (I Can't Hide)" by Tayls
We start the playlist this week with four of my favorite local musicians/songwriters. I met Cold Equation's Drew Kohl and Lindsay Ellyn around the same time - in late 2014. Kohl has recently moved to Nashville from Georgia with his Young America bandmate Taylor Alexander.  Ellyn has moved from New York City and was working an her first EP.  It was a heady time for me- meeting a ton of talented people and really immersing myself in the Nashville music community for the first time. Kohl has now released three fantastic songs under his new moniker, and Ellyn - who ended up marrying Kohl's old band mate, released her full-length debut on Friday. This song is a stunning rerecording one of my favorite songs of hers with vocals by the talented Kiely Connell and Jason Eskridge (of Sunday Night Soul fame).

I think I formally met Megan Palmer shortly after meeting Kohl and Ellyn. I first saw her  playing fiddle for Tim Easton and then Darrin Bradbury, but from the first time I heard her own songs I was captivated. It wasn't until later that I learned she had a full-time career as a palliative care nurse, and this is the second single in a row where she deals head-on with that part of her life. I was fortunate enough to see Megan in person for the first time in over a year on Thursday night and I heard her and Bob Lewis perform.

I am not sure if I have every properly met Taylor Cole, and I was much later to hearing his music with his band Tayls, but over the last year in particular his music has connected with me. An Instagram post he made about this song could have been written by me. It was uncanny.

5. "Change in Me" by Eddie Turner

Blues guitarist born in Cuba, raised in Chicago and now based in Denver, Colorado.

6. "All I Want (feat. Jake Shears)" by Boys Noize

7. "Runnin' Free" by Jeff Crosby

New single from the singer songwriter who divides time between Nashville and Boise Idaho.

8. "Let Me Let Go" by Dentist

9. "Old Mill" by Soo Line Loons

We featured a couple of early singles but the self-titled third album by this Minneapolis band is out now.

10. "Happy Every Day Leaning Latin Mix" by Aaron J. Trumm

11. "Every Day I Have the Blues" by Will Johns

12. "Where The Wind Cuts Your Skin" by Nature's Neighbor

13. "Sabor" by Dallas String Quartet and Jesus Molina

14. "Ticket for Two - Radio Edit" by Morten Remar

15. "Second Life" by Molino

16. "Stuck in Quarantine" by Jeremie & the Delicious Hounds

17. "Your Name" by Artio

18. "Wish You Well" by Scott Rocco

19. "Her Love" by Joe Wright

(More songs tomorrow)

Since this is my first post of only writing about some of the songs, I feel compelled to say that all of the music is fantastic and if I had unlimited time I would do each track justice. I strongly encourage you to listen to as much of the playlist as you can and if you hear something you like - find out more. If you can't find more information, please hit me up and I was steer you in the right direction. Music, these days, is easy to consume to fully appreciate it and experience it, takes effort - but it is worth it.

E2TG 5/13/2021 - Figuring it Out Along the Way - Plum Mix (I Woke Up Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

In the 10 year existence of E2TG, change has been the operative word. The blog and how I do it have undergone many changes - usually driven by some change in my circumstance or schedule etc. Now, with going out to hear music becoming a thing again, I am realizing that I made changes over the last 13-14 months that are going to be difficult to maintain in the emerging new reality.

I don't know yet what changes will be needed, and it may not happen overnight and the changes may be incremental. It also may take a series of missteps to arrive something that works. Bear with me and thanks as always for reading.

E2TG 5/11/2021 - Reflections - Bad Feeling Mix (Sunstroke Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

The challenge in these times in particular is to balance being engaged and informed versus being overwhelmed by negativity.

On the one hand, I recognize the inherent privilege in being about to disconnect from some of the injustices of our times. On the other hand, navigating the maze of things that seemingly attacke ones mental health is exhausting.

We all see people who are completely disengaged or who seem to be on high alert and in high actions 24/7 365, and I think there has to be a middle ground. It is also funny how, on paper, the middle ground can seem such a wide path, but in reality one is constantly in danger of falling over the edge.

This is not post with answers - only questions.  One can read the news without visiting the comment section. That seems to make good sense. But, is ignoring the comments section equivalent to burying ones head in the sand when it comes to the great divide be the left and the right. But also, can't one recognize and know that the divide exists even without wallowing in the filth of that divide?

Can't one feel good about the news for one day, even while know that a large number of people feel bad about the same news.

Anyway, those are my thoughts...

E2TG 5/10/2021 - Music City Monday & More - Drunk Dial Mix (Come & Get It Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Saturday, I got to catch Jason Ringenberg's first show in 14 months down on his farm.  With a threat of rain averted, it was a wonderful afternoon and early evening. I got to the farm early enough to visit with the chickens and the pony Tinkerbell, and to explore the grounds.

Musically, the show was fantastic. Jason played several Scorchers' classics as well as tracks from his solo records including his most recent Rhinestoned.  On several tracks he was joined by the always incredible Fats Kaplin and Kristi Rose (who are long time collaborators who also appeared on the new album).  Ringenberg's daughters also joined him on his version of the hymn "Christ the Lord is Risen Today". And one of his daughters played flute and sang harmony on "Highway Songs".

Jason had - as he does - a contest for the most obscure request of  song he had performed at some point. One of the requests was for a song that Farmer Jason had written several years before with a troupe of girl scouts - a couple of whom happened to be there.  When Jason confessed that he didn't remember a word of the song, the two young women got up and sang it.

The show ended with guest guitar phenom Boone Hood joining on a fiery version of "Absolutely Sweet Marie".

Several notable Nashville musicians were in attendance along with some hardcore fans and friends.

Featured Friday Playlist recap Part 2 (songs 16-25):

16.  "Otherside of Town" by Nature's Neighbor
Illinois-based collective Nature's Neighbor returns to the Playlist with their latest single.  Their new album Otherside is due out this coming Friday.

18. "Photos" by Ski Team
Next up, we have a gorgeous new track from this solo project of Brooklyn based singer-songwriter, producer, and guitarist Lucie Lozinski.
19. "Wait" by Go Analog
Next up, we have a new single from this Columbus Ohio based rock band.  It is being released to celebrate the vinyl release of their EP Moonlight Gram which includes this song. Great stuff.
20. "Falling Out North St." by Cathal Coughlan
Next up, the new single from Irish musician Cathal Coughlan (The Fatima Mansions, Microdisney).  We have featured some earlier tracks, and I continue to enjoy this music.
21. "Pay Attention" by Abby K
We shift gears and head to North Carolina for this new single from female-fronted hard rock/metal band based in Charlotte.
22. "Good Morning Sunshine" by Sunshine & The Blue Moon
Next up, some shimmering yet dark psychedelic grooves from this  Canadian band.  Their new album Born 2 Boogie is out in June, and I can't wait to hear more from this band.
23. "Silly Games" by The Supermercados
Next up, we have a cool recent single from this UK based band.  I'm digging it.
24. "Lifestream - Luke Slater's 7th Plain Remix" by Johannes Motschmann

E2TG 5/7/2021 - Featured Friday - Pizza & Drugs Mix (Take Good Care Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

A busy week for new music, and that means a jam packed Featured Friday Playlist.  If you want, you can check out the whole list which is embedded just below or you can follow along all week as I recap the list in five segments.  Part 1 is down below the jump covering the first 15 songs.

It is also a good time to tell you that much of the music featured here is available on Bandcamp and that today Bandcamp is waiving revenue sharing to put more of the proceeds of purchases directly in the hands of the artists you and I love.  If you love independent music like I do, support the artists in the most direct way you are able. Bandcamp is one of the better avenues.

E2TG 5/5/2021 - Something Something Back to It - Never Again Mix (All Mixed Up Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Well, I ventured out to live music for the second time last night and saw a lot of familiar faces that I had not seen in some time. It was amazing even as we are all still feeling our way through the new normal.

But, with that new normal - today I have returned to my office after 14 months or so of working from home. Short shuffle today - because I forgot my headphones...  it's hard to remember all the things that used to be a daily routine.

E2TG 5/4/2021 - A Decade or So - Blinkered Mix (Sunny Afternoon Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Some days, I think about why I have been able to continue E2TG for nearly a decade - when so many excellent blogs have ended or faded after a much short time. Besides my joke answers (stubbornness, not having an escape plan), the real answer, I think is doing it almost every day - even when I don't want to.  There have been days, of course, when I wasn't able to write, but I never didn't write just because I didn't feel like it.  I guess it is like other things (some good habits I need to work on)  - you just put one foot in front of the other (write one blog post after another) and ten years have passed.

Featured Friday Playlist Part 3 (Songs 23-30):

27. "8teen" by Kind Villain
Next up, we have a cover of Khalid's 2017 "8teen" from Kind Villain - which was founded by the artist Ev V Frederick.
28. "Cognitive Dissonance" by Swim the Current
New Jersey band Swim the Current bring the heaviness to their recent single.  A wonderful change of pace for the playlist.
