Music City Monday Morning Shuffle - Wearing a Big Smile Mix

My weekend show recap is highlighted by a couple of new releases.

Friday - after Tim Carroll's Rock 'n' Roll Happy Hour, I stuck around The 5 Spot for the CD Release show for Maxwell Putnam's new album Ode to a Tinhorn.  The line-up included a solo set from Alex of Little Bandit, Mark Fredson, a great solo set and a great full-band set from Putnam.  The night closed with a typically high-energy set from Justin and the Comics.

Sunday - I attended a party for the release of Stone Cupid's new album A Sad Clown.  An acoustic set with Julie Christensen, Sergio Webb, Chris Tench, and Parker Hawkins.  Love the new songs - which includes a cover of Darrin Bradbury's "Exile on Myrtle Beach".  The full band CD release show is set for April 9 at The Basement.

Another week, and it is time for a Music City Monday Shuffle.  From the ever-growing Music City Monday playlist on Spotify, we shuffle up this collection of music from past and current Nashville-based artists and bands.

If you want to peruse the playlist on your own, it is available HERE.

Now, let's shuffle:

"Ragdolls" by Jen Starsinic

We start things of with a track from The Flood and the Fire - the 2014 album by this singer-songwriter that I have just recently gotten into.  I got to see Starsinic live a couple of weeks ago, and I am now a fan.

"My Lucky Stars" by Julie Christensen, Stone Cupid

I posted up above about the CD Release party for Julie Christinen/Stone Cupid's latest album, and the shuffle brings up a track from her 2012 album Weed Like Us.  In case you've missed previous posts and don't know: Julie Christensen was a founding member of the Los Angeles band Divine Horsemen - who were among the early bands to combine elements of country music with punk rock.  Divine Horsemen are going to reunite for a few West Coast dates this spring.  Later, Christensen spent several years as a featured background singer for Leonard Cohen. Over the years, she had released several albums of her music.  Christensen moved to Nashville a few years ago.

"Falling Up" by John Hiatt

Next up, we have another great song from the album Riding With the King.  It was Hiatt's sixth album when released in 1983, and it was also my first introduction to his music. I have been a fan ever since.

"Nocture" by Joe Pisapia

Next up, we have the first of two tracks from the latest solo album by a long-time Nashville musician/songwriter/producer.  I first knew of Joe Pisapia through his band Joe Marc's Brother.  Marc Pisapia, Joe's brother plays with Joe these days. Joe Pisapia's credits include time with the band Guster and as part of k.d. lang's band. I got to see Pisapia a few weeks back at The 5 Spot, and I was blown away.  This new album, called Connection, sounds great.

"Western Theme - Precious Times" by Walk the West

This track from the Return to Elliston Square Live at Exit/In album features the introduction of the band, the band's theme song, and one of their great songs from their self-titled album. The band's charismatic and talented leader - Paul Kirby passed away a few years ago. He is missed.

"Big Chief and the Medicine Man" by Erica Blinn

Another CD release show that I attended just a few weeks ago. Erica Blinn's new album is called Better Than Gold.  It is a great record. You may recall, E2TG premiered her second single from this album back in September.  Erica Blinn is definitely a Nashville artist to keep an eye (and an ear) on.

"There But for the Grace of God I Go" by Joe Pisapia

Next, we have our second track from Connection.

"Billy Dee" (Live) by Kris Kristofferson

I just recently decided to splurge on a ticket for one of the three nights Kristofferson will be playing at The Basement East in May. It is a rare opportunity to see this legend in a relatively small venue. This a live recording of a song featured on his second album, the Silver Tongue Devil and I. This is a 1972 Recording from RCA Studios.

"Waltz of the Ohio" by Fats Kaplin

And we close with a track from multi-instrumentalist Fats Kaplin.  It was included on  his 2006 album The Fatman Cometh. From a 2013 release which combined The Fatman Cometh amd his later album World of Wonder. Kaplin is a Nashville and national treasure.
