And suddenly it is Monday! (Very) light snow has given way to sunshine here in Nashville.
Saturday, Mark Robinson and his band rocked The 5 Spot. I took my daughter, and we both had a blast. We are both huge Mark Robinson fans.
Monday, we check in with our Music City Monday shuffle. All songs by artists who do or have called Nashville home. Spanning decades and genres - as we tend to do. This is the only shuffle we do from a Spotify playlist. If you want to browse that playlist which has over 800 songs (and counting), you do so HERE .
Let's shuffle!
"Bubba Bubba" by The Cactus Brothers
The first of two songs in today's shuffle from the self-title album from the Walk the West offshoot - The Cactus Brothers. This song was co-written by the late Paul Kirby (Cactus Brother and Walk the West front man) and Gary Scruggs - who is the son of Earl Scruggs and the father (with songwriter Gail Davies) of Nashville musician Chris Scruggs."Look Out" by Tim Carroll
Next up, a bluesy rarity from Tim Carroll. the title track to his 2012 album - I could not find a video for this song.
"Fast Fuse Blues" by Paul Burch
Next up, the first of two from Meridian Rising by Nashville bandleader/singer/songwriter/musician/DJ Paul Burch. Meridian Rising is an imagined autobiography of the great Jimmy Rodgers ("The Singing Brakeman") who was born in Meridian, Missippi in 1897. The album features guests like Jon Langford, William Tyler, Billy Bragg, and Tim O'Brien.
"A Feather's Not a Bird" by Rosanne Cash
Next, we have the lead track from the fourteen studio album by Rosanne Cash - The River and The Thread. Cash is, of course, the daughter of the late Johnny Cash.
"I Promise I'm Scared Now" by Josh Morris
Next, we have a track from Can't Wait 'Til Now (which you may recall I reviewed back in 2016) by Nashville singer-songwriter-producer Josh Morris. I regret missing his show on Saturday - which had some other favorites on the bill. This is an instrumental track.
"The Price of Love" by The Cactus Brothers
Next up, our second track from The Cactus Brothers album. This time, we have an Everly Brothers cover. The song was released in 1965 and has been covered by artist as diverse as Status Quo, Poco, Depeche Mode, Elvis Costello, and Linda Ronstandt among others.
"From A Mountain, From A Hill" by Justin and the Cosmics
Justin Collins is perhaps best known as one half of the production duo Cosmic Thug (with Adam Landry) (who produced many of Deer Ticks most successful albums), and to E2TG readers has a co-founder of the Cosmic Thug Record label with Landry and long-time E2TG favorite Pony Boy. E2TG readers may also recall his name coming up as part of The Buddies. Justin has fronted Justin and the Cosmics for at least a decade - this track is from the 2008 album Hangin' Out in My Body. Live, Collins is fearless - often ending up collapsed on the floor of the club by the end of the set. I am looking forward to seeing him Friday when the band plays as part of the CD release show for Max Putnam at The 5 Spot.
"Oh, Didn't He Ramble" by Paul Burch
Our second track from Meridian Rising. Paul Burch was part of the mid 90s revival of Lower Broadway in Nashville. He hosts a weekly show on WXNA - Works Progress Radio Hour - Thursdays at 8:00pm.
"Bible and a Gun" by Jason Ringenberg, Steve Earle
Next up... From Jason Ringenberg's 2008 solo compilation - Best Tracks and Sidetracks 1979-2007 - Jason along with Steve Earle performing a song they wrote together. The song previously appeared on the Jason and the Scorchers album Thunder and Fire (which featured several songs co-written with well-known country songwriters).
"Tell Me Lies" (Live) by Royal Court of China
And we close things out with a live performance of a song originally on the self-titled album by Royal Court of China. This is from the Return to Elliston Place Live at Exit/In 2008. Royal Court of China emerged in the mid/late 1980s - a successor to the thrash band The Enemy. Eventually signing to a major label. Between that self-titled album and the follow-up Geared and Primed - a few members left and formed The Shakers (which may have overlapped???), but a couple of those members have returned for reunion shows. (I'm not sure who all was in the band for this reunion). Rumor is there may be some new music from Royal Court of China in the future.
