Hey! Right off, I just to warn you that this is going to be a crazy week. So, apologies in advance if some of my content is lighter than usual.
One thing going on is the Spring 2019 Pledge Drive for WXNA! We are in the process of moving into a new space and along with the general costs of operating the station, we rely on our community for support. The Pledge Drive is a great time to give - you can make one-time donations or set up a recurring donation. They have some great thank you premiums. I know that some of the past gifts have been highly coveted, but they are almost always only available during the Pledge Drive. Many shows are having people provide matching donations, so be on the look at for that information to make your donation go further.
I will be on the air with Sounds of the Bayou with DJ Cajun Mitch from 6-7pm tonight and working the phones from 7-8pm. During the show, Fats Kaplin and Kristie Rose will be matching donations.
Saturday, I hung out at The 5 Spot all night. First up, was Brett Ryan Stewart - who delivered a great set - backed by band that included his wife Rosemary, plus Anana Kaye and Irakli Gabriel. Up next, was Amelia White (who it was great seeing upon her return from a UK tour) backed by her Blue Souvenirs (Parker Hawkins, Paul Neihaus, Justin Amaral, Johnny Duke, plus Julie Christensen on bgv for a few songs).
The late show was the Harvest Spoon benefit and Neil Young tribute. I don't have enough time to tell you all about this, but it was as good as I expected. Bob Lewis, Meghan Hayes, Paul Neihaus (again), Rorey Carroll, and Bones (The 5 Spot co-owner) performed some classics from Neil Young's extensive catalog. Then, host Jason "Shakes"delivered a very funny stand-up routine, followed by a ace band - led by Jay Rutherford and Aaron Mortsenson of Los Colognes performed Neil Young's album Harvest Moon from front to back - aided by great musicians and an all-star cast of singers.
The show ended with all performs from the show plus Lilly Hiatt and Allen Thompson - doing "Rockin' in the Free World"
Now - let's get to the Music City Monday shufffle - as I am almost out of time.
"Cole Durhew" by Tom House
First up, a track from our old friend Tom House - this one comes from a 1996 compilation called Insurgent Country Vol. 3: Nashville - The Other Side of the Alley. A great compilation of Nashville outsider country music from that time.
"Heartbreak Comin' Down" by Great Peacock
Next up, some insurgent country from today - we have Great Peacock from their 2018 album Gran Pavo Real. A really wonderful song.
"Arrival/Departure" by Ghost Town Remedy
Ghost Town Remedy have some new music out and coming, but this goes back to their 2017 album Caffeine Dreams. A nifty little number.
"Button Nose" by Loudon Wainwright III
More Loudon Wainwright from his recent box set Years in the Making. A cute little song.
"Lonely at The Top" by Dan Baird
Another from that Other Side of the Alley compilation - this time from our favorite Dan Baird.
"The Albatross" by Tom House
Next up - more Tom House - this time from his own album Inside These Walls - It's never a bad day when I have two Tom House songs in the shuffle.
"She's Not There" by David Olney
David Olney is one of the best songwriters around, and it is always fun when he does a cover song. From his latest album This Side or The Other - this is a cover of a song by The Zombies - which was written by Rob Argent - later of Argent. David Olney makes it sound like a David Olney song.
"Codeine Blues" by The Big Dumb
From We Get Along Too Well - we actually just featured this song last week - as part of our regular shuffle - but it was also in my Music City Monday playlists as well.. anyway, I'm not complaining. I ran into 3/5's of The Big Dumb at the Harvest Spoon event Saturday night - separately.
"Better Not Ask" by Amelia White
I mentioned Amelia White's outstanding show Saturday and voila she shows up in the shuffle - this time from the album that gave its name to her band - Blue Souvenirs.
"All the Beds I've Made" by Caroline Spence
Next up, Caroline Spence from her 2017 album Spades and Roses. A great song.
"Trinity Lane" by Lilly Hiatt
And we close with one of the surprise guests as Saturday's Harvest Spoon - the one and only Lilly Hiatt - with the title track from her breakout album Trinity Lane. This song and the subsequent album - blew everyone away when it was released - even people who knew what an immense talent she is.
