Nashville is changing rapidly. It has been for several years now. Cool old places are closing down and being replaced which much less cool places or being abandoned altogether. It can be disheartening sometimes.
My roots here are deep, and I am not leaving anytime soon. So, what am I to do?
Fortunately, I am still reminded on a regular basis that Nashville is a great city for original, independent live music. Take last night, I headed to Dee's in Madison - caught the tail-end of some fine world-class bluegrass (which happens every Monday), and then caught some awesome songwriters for this weeks edition of the Madison Guild Monday.
Hosted by Ryan Sobb, the night featured E2TG Artist of the Year (2017), Rayvon Pettis, the always amazing Jeremy Ivey, Bob Lewis and Megan Palmer - trading songs and backing each other, the wonderful Tommy Womack and Lisa Oliver Gray, Rayvon's talented sister Grace Pettis (filling in for the ailing Anna Joy Harris), and then Ryan Sobb. Sobb's songs are witty and heartfelt - he is one of my favorite writers these days. Then, Ryan did a stunning cover of Tommy Womack's epic, classic "Alpha Male and the Canine Mystery Blood" - which knocked my socks off.
This was what Monday nights can look like in the Nashville area - if you know where to look.
On to the Trending Tuesday shuffle!
"Your Majesty" by Mark Mathews
First up, we have London based singer-songwriter Mark Mathews with a track from his just released EP Fizzy Beasts. Cool stuff.
"Come Home" by Jeff Mix and the Songhearts
Another track from Lost Vegas by very recent Vegas to Nashville transplant - Jeff Mix - who we met at the Magnolia Roads American Roots Hoedown IV - a bit over a week ago.
"3rd and Bannister" by Pilotcan
Next, we go back to the wonderful Bats Fly Out From Under the Bridge. I have been fairly well obsessed with this album by the Scottish band. They have a wonderful, original sound."Brasstown" by 6 String Drag
Next, another great track from the Record Store vinyl reissue - The Jag Sessions by long-running roots band 6 String Drag.
"I Don't Think So" by Marty Willson-Piper
Next, another RSD 2019 reissue from former Church member Marty Willson-Piper from his album Hanging Out in Heaven. Wilson-Piper has great pop sensibilities which he brings to the varied styles of music he presents in different incarnations. Hanging Out in Heaven was a 2000 release - that hit vinyl for the first time last month.
"Amanda and the Commander (Dance While You Got the Chance)" by Bruce Smith
Next up, we have another great song from 'Til the Wheels Fall Off by Austin, Texas based Bruce Smith. Digging this album.
"Newark" by Darrin Bradbury
Next up, we have Darrin Bradbury's first release since signing to ANTI- records. "Newark" about Darrin's home state is at once typical of his understated charm, gentle humor, and warm heart. It is a good indication of his most recent songs. I have said many times, that meeting Darrin has definitely shaped the last several years of E2TG, and I can't wait to see what he does next.
"Memory of Love" by Beauty in Chaos (ft. Johnny Indovina)
Next up, we have another track from Finding Beauty in Chaos by the project led by Michael Ciravolo - this track features Johnny Indovina from the band Human Drama.
"Down in Chulahoma" by Ted Drozdowski; Coyote Motel
We close with a nice pairing of songs from two local favorites. The first is by E2TG favorite Ted Drozdowski from the self-titled album by his latest project Coyote Motel. This song drips of southern gothic charm and kudzu.
"Codeine Blues" by The Big Dumb
And we close with a another track from the debut EP (We Get Along a Little Too Well) by E2TG Band of the Year (2018) The Big Dumb. This song really dig pair well with the Coyote Motel song that preceded it.
