Music City Monday Morning Shuffle - Used to Fall Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

We are back and it is another Music City Monday - where we take a glance at some great Nashville-centered music from the past and the present.   As usual, we have a good mixed bag of goodies.  So, let's get right to it!

"The World Has Last Its Faith" by Joe Pisapia

First up, we have a track from Connections - the latest solo album from multi-instrumentalist Joe Pisapia whose credits include time spent in the band Guster and as part of K.D. Lang's band the Siss Boom Bang.  This album shows off his songwriting prowess.  Pisapia is also the Joe in Joe Marc's Brother (stay tuned).

"Giving Up the Ghost" by Media Pig

Next up, we have our first listen to the album and band, Media Pig - which is a project of one of our favorite guitar plays - Chris Tench.  We know Chris from his work with Julie Christensen in Stone Cupid (and many others).  From what I understand, this project has been in the works for some time and was just released back in February.  It was recorded and Sound Shelter Studios in Franklin.

"The Shubbery's Dead" by Government Cheese

Government Cheese were technically a Bowling Green, Kentucky band - but they moved to Nashville after the Bowling Green Massacre - just kidding.  They earned their place in this shuffle for several reasons.  1. They were a vital part of the Nashville music scene in the 1980s (and beyond)  2. They introduced the world to Tommy Womack - who is definitely Nashville and 3. They appear on the definitive Nashville 80s rock compilation - Return to Elliston Square. Bowling Green may want to fight us, but for today, we are claiming the Cheese!

"Should Have" by Bill Eberle

Bill Eberle's Soft Light album was a highlight of last year.  This song, though, goes back to his 2016 album, Matter and Light. Eberle has long been and remains one of Nashville's best and perhaps most underrated songwriters. I'm not sure who is underrating him (certainly not me) but I definitely don't hear his name mentioned as often as I should.

"Sunshine State" by Becky Warren

Becky Warren breakthrough a couple of years ago with her powerhouse War Surplus album.  Since then, she has opened for Indigo Girls and received much well-deserved attention. This year, she released the follow-up and proved she has much more to say. Undesireable  is a wonderful album, and this is one of many great songs on that album.

"Peanuts (Live)" by Walk the West

We have another live Walk the West track - this from the Return to Elliston Square Live album. The band were known for their instrumentals - like this cover of the Vince Guaraldi composition from the Peanut's cartoons - done up Western style.

"Kitchen Dancing" by Becca Mancari

Becca Mancari is one of Nashville best songwriters working today.  This is from her 2017 album Good Woman. She is working on the follow-up, and I believe it is due this year.

"Ronelle" by Joe, Marc's Brother

Speaking of Joe, Marc's Brother - as we were earlier.  Joe - being Joe Pisapia, and Marc being Marc Pisapia. Joe, Marc's Brother we a fixture on the Nashville music scene in the 1990s.  The name came from the time when Joe was primarily known as being Marc's brother.  See how that works.

"The Music of the Night" by Steve Forbert

When Jason Ringenberg was talking about going to the Bluebird back in the day (he finally played the storied venue last week), one of the songwriters he mentioned seeing was the great Steve Forbert.  Like many, I became a Steve Forbert fan with his late 70s album Jackrabbit Slim and his hit song Romeo's Tune, but his career has been going strong ever since.  His latest album, The Magic Tree was released last year, and it is wonderful.

"A Cockroach After the Bomb" by Tommy Womack

We had Government Cheese earlier - the band was immortalized in the book, The Cheese Chronicles by band member Tommy Womack.  Womack is not only an author, he is also a WXNA DJ and one of Nashville's finest songwriters.  This is one of his many great songs - from his album There, I Said It!

"Devil Woman" by Daryl Dasher

Next up, we have a track from Long Road Now by another (I would say) underrated Nashville songwriter.  I love the vocals on this track.

"How's the Weather" by Joshua Black Wilkins

Joshua Black Wilkins is fantastic photographer as well as being an amazing songwriter. I am a fan of all of his work.  I got to see him last year at Muddy Roots.  This is a track from his latest release Valentine Sessions.
