It is time for another Music City Monday! What I love about this particular weekly shuffle is that it serves as a reminder of just how much awesome music has and does emanate from Nashville. It is always a cool combination of friends and legends (and legends who have become friends and friends who are becoming legends).
Another reminder of how cool Nashville is: The WXNA Spring Pledge Drive just finished up, and we thanks to the generous support of the community, we will continue to bring great radio to Nashville.
Another reminder: I took my daughter to Dee's yesterday, we caught the end of Jon Worthy and the Bends playing a very early show (Adelai loves loud rock and roll!) and then we stuck around for a good portion of the Sunday Brunch hosted by Megan Palmer - with Bob Lewis, Jason Quicksall, Annie McCue, Jon Latham, and more.
Let's get right into the shuffle!
"Exile on Myrtle Beach" by Julie Christensen and Stone Cupid
A nice way to start this shuffle - with Julie Christensen and Stone Cupid covering Darrin Bradbury's song "Exile on Myrtle Beach". One of Darrin's best, and Julie and company do a great job covering the song. The song mentioned Fran's Eastside, and it brings me back to sitting in Fran's with Julie listening to Darrin (more than likely doing this song).
"Reputation" by Jon Byrd
We go back to Jon Byrd's classic Byrd's Auto Parts album now with a song he wrote called "Reputation". Jon Byrd's band is named for this album, and the word is that they "don't rock, ever", but I have seen them come dangerously close to rocking - especially when they do a trucking song.
"Western Avenue" by Smoky White Devils
Richie Owens is a great link between "old" Nashville rock and "new" Nashville rock. A founding member of The Movement and Richie Owens and the Farm Bureau. Back in the 80s. Owens founded Neo Records and had his hand in many classic albums of that era. Smoky White Devils features Owens joined by an all-star crew of veteran musicians (Nick Kane, John Reed, and Michael Ferguson) and they rock! And when they aren't rocking, they burn! This is from their self-titled debut album.
"Take a Boat" by Adrian + Meredith
I've been doing a lot of remembering of past E2TG anniversary shows. Adrian + Meredith played the 5th Anniversary show way back in 2016. (Stone Cupid played, too). We are eagerly anticipating the new album from Adrian + Meredith (affectionately known as The Meredith Band (feat. Adrian)). I've heard some of the new songs, and they are wonderful. This goes back to their current most recent album More Than a Little (from 2016), and this is one of my favorite tunes from that album.
"Ashes (Trayvon Martin Blues)" by Bill Eberle
Next up, an emotionally powerhouse of a song (and still timely) from Bill Eberle - going back to his 2016 Matter and Time album. His most recent album Soft Light also contained some timely and powerful songs.
"My Sally" by Eric Brace, Peter Cooper, Thomm Jutz
We continue to feature Riverland on our Trending Shuffle, but today takes us back to 2017's Profiles in Courage, Frailty, and Discomfort - and song written by Eric Brace that sounds like it could be a lost bit of traditional music.
"Help Yourself" by The White Animals
It's always good to visit the Nashville music scene that I first encountered as a young music fan. The White Animals - along with Jason and the Scorchers were at the pinnacle of the local scene back in those days. This is a track from their 3000 Nights in Babylon compilation.
"Breakdown" by Joanna Barbera
And we close things out with Joanna Barbera (who played last year's E2TG residency) with her wonderful take on the Tom Petty classic. I first heard her do this song live (and a show with Darrin Bradbury and David Dondero).
