Hey! I'm back! I almost forgot how to do one of these shuffles...
We have an exciting week coming up - culminating in a really awesome video premiere on Friday. So stay tuned.
To kick things off, we have a spectacular Music City Monday - all songs with some connection to Nashville (aka Music City USA).
Let's get right to it!
"Lite Dream" by Diarrhea Planet
First up, we have a track from I'm Rich Beyond Your Wildest Dreams by the late lamented - high energy Nashville band, Diarrhea Planet. A great way to kick start my morning commute."Pending Further Notice" by Bill Lloyd
Further proof (as if it was needed) that Bill Lloyd is one of the best pop songwriters around. This is from his It's Happening Now album that was released in 2017. He released the follow-up Working the Long Game late last year. This is just a straight up fantastic song.
"Caravan of Fools" by John Prine
When John Prine released The Tree of Forgiveness in April of 2018, it was his first album featuring new songs in over a decade. The album proved that one of our finest living songwriters is still going strong nearly half a century into his distinguished career. This song was co-written by Prine along with the great Pat McLaughlin and Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys).
"I Received a Letter" by Tom House
Tom House is one of my favorite (and one of the most unique songwriters in Nashville's amazing line of great songwriters). I was struck while listening to this songs (from his Inside These Walls album) that his songs have a old-timely feel with complex subject matter, and unique phrasings. His music seems to grab hold of my attention."Buy Me a Little" by Flying Buffaloes
Next up, we have a track from one of my favorite current local bands. You may recall we did a premiere of the band's song, "Hey ; ) is for Horses - which like this song comes from their EP Taking Off. Great song and a great sound.
"Heathen" by Bee Taylor
Next up, we have a fairly recent single from an E2TG Favorite. You may recall Bee Taylor played our anniversary residency last year. Bee Taylor is one of the most dynamic and exciting performers in Nashville these days.
"Say It With Flowers" by John Hiatt
Next up, we have John Hiatt from his 1983 Riding With the King album. I have always loved this album - which pre-dated Hiatt's breakthrough success with Bring the Family and subsequent albums. I love the heavy sound on many tracks on the album including this one."Just One More" by Zach Schmidt
Although, I love to point out that Nashville is more than country music, it is important to know that Music City still attracts some of the best artists in the country/folk realm. Zach Schmidt is one of those and one of the best of those. This is a track from his The Day We Lost the War Album. We are eagerly awaiting word about the follow-up album. Meanwhile, if you see Zach Schmidt on the bill in a town near you, get yourself to that show. You won't be sorry.
"Tree Line" by Sergio Webb
Besides the great songwriters, Nashville is also home to many of the best musicians in the world - some of whom also write songs. Sergio Webb is an out of this world great guitar player. I have watched him play from just a few feet away - and been transfixed watching him work his magic on a guitar. I am not a guitar player at all - so it says something that even I realized I was witnessing something magical. Webb is best known as a sideman, but he was released a handful of albums of his own - including this one - Bolivar Blues.
"Dabbs Avenue" by Becky Warren
Next up, we have a track from Undesireable from another great, newer Nashville songwriter. Becky Warren has opened for the Indigo Girls. Her debut, War Surplus was a concept album. This is from the follow-up.
"Oh King Richard" by Rodney Crowell
We close with a track from Crowell's Street Language album (his fourth album released in 1986). The album was co-produced by Booker T. Jones (Booker T and the MGs) and coincidentally, the album contains a John Hiatt song that originally included on Hiatt's Riding With the King album - which we mentioned earlier. The song is a tribute to the NASCAR great Richard Petty.
