A fun night out. First up, the EP release show for Megan Palmer and Rayvon Pettis. Ryan Sobb opened the show with a solo set followed by Mercy Bell performing with Trace Faulkner.
Next up was Rayvon and Megan backed by a killer band: Griffin Winton, Bob Lewis, Jonathan Beam, and Aaron Shafer-Haiss. They performed the seven songs from the EP - 3 written by Rayvon and 3 written by Megan - plus an R.E.M. cover. Then they played a couple more songs, Rayvon Pettis' excellent Michigan Mansions and one of my all-time favorite songs, Megan Palmer's Knife Twister.
After that, I headed to the Inglewood Lounge. I am not sure why I took me so long to get to this cool spot right on Gallatin Rd. Last night, it was Luella and Kevin Gordon playing duo style. It was my second time seeing them in this format, and it was fantastic.
Okay - only six songs in the shuffle today - thanks in part of a relatively pain-free commute and an eight minute song. Let's get to it!
"Scatter Me" by TC&I
First up, we have our first listen to the forthcoming live album by Terry Chambers and Colin Moulding founding members of XTC. The two teamed up a couple of years ago to release an EP called Great Aspirations and played some live dates in support. This is a recording of one of those shows. And our first listen, it an original song from the EP.
"Gateway Motel" by Jeff Mix & The Songhearts
Jeff Mix recently relocated from Los Vegas to Nashville. This is a great song from his album (and film) called Lost Vegas Hiway.
"Thanksgiving" by Maternity Leave
Next up, we have the lead and title track from the debut release from the mysterious Conecticut band Maternity Leave - which was released on New Years Day 2019. Hints and clues lead me to think the band may contain some subset of members of The Foresters, Them Airs, Sonic Reducers, Discount Ravioli, and more.
"Life Begins at the Hop" by TC&I
Next up, we have our second TC&I live track. This is their live rendition of Colin Mouldin penned song that was his first a-side contribution for XTC - relesaed by that band ahead of their third album Drums and Wires. The song was included on some releases of that album. This is an excellent version of a classic song.
"Incoming" by Greg Felden
Next up, we have another from California singer-songwriter Greg Felden from his album Made of Strings. A wonderful song from an outstanding album.
"W.S. Walcott's Medicine Show" by Mrs. Henry
And we close things out with another track from that live version of The Last Waltz by California band Mrs. Henry. This is a song that was omitted from the film and original album but included in the 2002 reissue. It was released on The Band's album Stage Fright. Really enjoying this recording of an ambitious live show.
